Packaging machine solutions for hot or lumpy filling
In many areas of industrial liquid filling, the standard assumption – products at room temperature and with a homogeneous consistency – is not sufficient. In the food and cosmetics industries in particular, there are numerous products that either have to be filled hot or processed in chunky form. Examples include sauces, soups, jams and care products with solid particles.

Our filling systems and filling machines are tailored to these special requirements. Thanks to state-of-the-art filling technology and flexible adaptation, we implement solutions that are suitable for both highly viscous media and products containing pieces or fibres. Innovative piston dosing machines and precise control systems enable even difficult-to-fill products to be filled reliably, cleanly and efficiently.

As an experienced packaging machine manufacturer, we develop tailor-made packaging solutions that optimise your production processes – from hot filling and chunky products to complex combinations. This ensures quality, product safety and maximum cost-effectiveness in production.

Align, turn

After positioning, the BREITNER alignment station ensures that asymmetrical bottles are rotated or turned into a defined position. This ensures that grip areas, labelling surfaces or special geometries are precisely aligned for subsequent processing – accurately, in the correct format and with process reliability.

Blowing out

A crucial step in cleaning containers before filling. The bottles are blown out from the inside with normal or optionally ionised air to reliably remove dust, particles or production residues. This ensures greater product safety and hygienic conditions in the filling process. BREITNER integrates the blowing process seamlessly into the line sequence – efficiently, effectively and designed to meet the highest standards of cleanliness.

Variable bunker size

Variable bunker size selection for BREITNER bottle erectors. Depending on the space available and production volume, the size of the storage bunker can be flexibly adapted to your requirements. This enables longer refill intervals, optimised line availability and perfect integration into existing production environments. BREITNER offers tailor-made solutions for efficient bottle handling – from compact to large-volume.

Under-mirror filling

Filling process below the liquid level – a method that is particularly useful for foaming, sensitive or viscous products. The orange filling nozzle is immersed in the container in a controlled manner to ensure foam-free, safe and gentle filling. Ideal for demanding applications in the food, cosmetics and chemical industries.

Over-mirror filling

Overfill filling is a proven method for ensuring that bottles and containers are always filled to a uniform level, regardless of minimal differences in container volume. Unlike other dosing methods, the filling tube does not dip into the bottle but remains at the neck of the bottle. From there, the product is filled until the fill level reaches exactly the desired level.

CIP/SIP

CIP (cleaning in place) and SIP (sterilisation in place) functions on BREITNER filling machines. These automated cleaning and sterilisation processes are carried out without dismantling the system and ensure maximum hygiene and product safety. Ideal for demanding applications with high cleaning requirements. BREITNER integrates CIP/SIP systems individually – for time-saving, reproducible and validatable cleaning processes in your production. Efficient, safe and compliant with standards.

Working linearly

Linear operation of our BREITNER filling and capping machines. In this design, the containers move in a straight line through the system in cycles – ideal for flexible production with fast format changes and high accessibility. Linear machines from BREITNER are particularly suitable for medium to high output ranges and a wide variety of container shapes. They enable precise, clean and efficient filling as well as secure capping – perfect for applications in the chemical, cosmetics and food industries.

Working in a circular motion

Rotary capping machines, such as those used by BREITNER for high cycle rates. These machines cap bottles and containers continuously in a rotary cycle – quickly, precisely and reliably. Ideal for automated filling lines in the food, cosmetics and chemical industries. BREITNER offers flexible solutions for various types of closures – from screw caps to pump caps.

Inductive flow measurement

Inductive flow measurement in BREITNER filling machines – a precise and contactless measurement method for conductive liquids. This technology is ideal for aqueous, low-viscosity or slightly foaming products and ensures accurate filling quantity control without mechanical components in the product flow. BREITNER uses inductive flow meters where hygiene, speed and accuracy are required – e.g. in the chemical, detergent or food industries. The result: reliable filling processes with minimal product loss and maximum efficiency.

Mass flow measurement

Mass flow measurement in BREITNER filling machines – a high-precision measurement method for liquid products. By directly measuring the product weight in the flow, this technology enables exact filling quantity control – regardless of temperature, viscosity or conductivity. Ideal for demanding applications in the chemical, cosmetics and food industries. BREITNER uses mass flow meters to ensure maximum accuracy, reduced product losses and maximum process reliability.

Piston filler

Piston fillers – a proven dosing technology offered by BREITNER in addition to flow measurement. Piston fillers are particularly suitable for viscous, foaming or sensitive products and enable precise, volume-based filling. BREITNER develops and builds piston fillers for a wide range of industries, including cosmetics, food and chemicals. Our systems are flexibly adaptable, easy to clean and guarantee maximum dosing accuracy with every fill.

Explosion protection

Explosion protection in BREITNER filling and capping machines – a crucial safety aspect when handling potentially explosive substances. Our machines can be supplied in an ATEX-certified version and meet all requirements for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. BREITNER ensures maximum safety through specially protected components and tested system solutions – for a reliable, legally compliant and process-safe filling and capping process under EX conditions.

Bottles

High flexibility of BREITNER filling and capping machines. Our systems can process not only classic round bottles, but also complex, asymmetrical bottle shapes – without the need for pucks or additional guide aids. Whether PET, PE or glass: BREITNER ensures reliable feeding, precise filling and secure capping of a wide variety of bottle types. Ideal for demanding applications in the cosmetics, chemical and food industries.

Canister

In addition to bottles, we can also automatically feed, precisely fill and securely seal larger containers such as canisters. Whether 1-litre bottles or 40-litre canisters – our systems are designed for different sizes and shapes. Ideal for applications in the chemical, cleaning agent and food industries. BREITNER offers tailor-made solutions for efficient filling and sealing of canisters – reliable, precise and powerful.

Transport star

In the BREITNER VS capper, the synchronised transport star ensures precise bottle transport under the capping head. Bottle by bottle, each bottle is securely positioned and guided through the capping process in synchronised cycles – for maximum process stability, high repeat accuracy and reliable capping quality.

Working in cycles

The cyclical version of our BREITNER filling and capping machines. In this mode of operation, the containers are stopped, filled and capped in cycles – ideal for precise dosing and high process reliability. Cycled machines offer maximum control at each filling station and are particularly suitable for sensitive products or varying container shapes. BREITNER uses this technology specifically to guarantee precise, clean and reproducible results in the chemical, cosmetics and food industries.

Working method continuous

The continuous operation of our BREITNER rotary filling machines, rotary capping machines and monoblock systems. In this mode of operation, the containers are processed in a continuous cycle without stops – ideal for high cycle rates and maximum efficiency. The continuous movement enables particularly gentle product processing, short cycle times and a consistent production flow. With this technology, BREITNER offers high-performance solutions for automated packaging lines with the highest demands on precision and speed.

Screw cap

Whether classic or customised, at BREITNER we process screw caps reliably and precisely. Our capping machines are designed for a wide variety of formats, materials and requirements – from standard solutions to customer-specific applications.

Caps with riser tube

Ideal for products where liquids need to be dispensed in specific doses or removed completely. Typical examples include pump caps, dispensing caps and suction systems. BREITNER specialises in the automatic sorting and reliable processing of such riser tube closures. Our filling and capping systems are optimally tailored to these special requirements – efficient, reliable and suitable for a wide range of industries such as chemicals, cosmetics and household care.

Lateral displacement

An efficient transport solution within the plant. This technology allows containers to be transferred transversely to the conveyor direction, enabling faster cycle times. The major advantage: with the same machine size, the transverse transfer increases output by at least 20%. Ideal for companies that want to increase their production output without requiring more space. Efficient, space-saving and powerful – made by BREITNER.

Thread cutter

A technical solution for cleanly cutting product strings after the filling process. The string cutter prevents stringing and dripping, especially with viscous products such as jam with fruit pieces. The result: a clean filling process, less product loss and consistently high packaging quality. BREITNER integrates this technology into automated filling lines for greater efficiency and process reliability.

Adjustable torque

Our systems enable precisely controlled sealing force – individually adjustable depending on the type of closure, material and product requirements. This ensures that every closure is applied securely, tightly and gently. The adjustable torque technology ensures consistent quality, reduced reject rates and maximum process reliability – ideal for automated packaging lines with changing requirements.

Hot filling

Some products, such as honey, are filled warm – they are then thinner and can thus be filled more quickly and cleanly.

Jam or certain sauces are filled hot (typically above 80°C) to reduce germ contamination and thus improve shelf life.

Because viscosity is highly temperature-dependent, it is crucial for the precise filling process that the product in the product container is kept at a very even and constant temperature and protected from cooling.

Our double-walled and heated product vessel, possibly with an agitator to distribute the supplied heat, ensures a constant temperature throughout the vessel.

Lumpy & sedimentary products

Jam or sauces, for example for fondue, present special challenges for the filling process: Small pieces of fruit, which make up a high-quality jam, or sauces, which easily break down into their fat- and water-containing components, must be kept moving in the product vessel until the last moment before filling.

An agitator, mounted at the top or bottom of the product vessel, ensures uniform mixing.

Which speed and which shape of agitator blade is appropriate? Your specialists and ours jointly determine this technical design. Here, too, we have decades of experience and can therefore advise you perfectly.

A piston filling machine is suitable for lumpy mixtures.

Frequently asked questions
Our answers

What is ‘hot filling’ and when is it useful?

In hot filling, the product is typically filled at temperatures above 80 °C, which reduces the bacterial load and significantly improves shelf life. Temperature control ensures better flow and filling properties, especially for products such as jam or sauces with chunky ingredients, or products such as honey, which are filled warm.

What does ‘lumpy filling’ mean and what challenges does it pose?

Lumpy filling applies to products that contain visible components (e.g. pieces of fruit) or have sedimenting components. In this case, the product in the container must be kept in motion by agitators until filling so that even distribution and clean dosing are possible. For lumpy mixtures, a piston filling machine from BREITNER is recommended, for example.

What equipment does BREITNER offer for safe hot or lump filling?

For hot filling, BREITNER uses heated, double-walled containers with or without agitators to maintain a constant temperature. For chunky products, agitators (top or bottom) are integrated into the product container, with the design – such as speed and blade geometry – being determined in consultation with the customer. BREITNER also uses suitable filling technology (e.g. piston filling machines) to ensure precise and gentle dosing.

How do product properties such as viscosity, temperature or sedimentation influence the choice of filling method?

Viscosity is highly dependent on temperature during hot filling, which is why maintaining a constant temperature in the product container is crucial. Products containing particles or sediment require continuous mixing, otherwise there is a risk of separation, uneven filling or loss of quality. BREITNER analyses these parameters in advance and designs the containers, stirring technology and filling machines accordingly.
