Aseptic filling is a process in which products are filled into pre-sterilised packaging under sterile conditions. The aim is to prevent microbiological contamination and extend shelf life without the use of preservatives.

This method is widely used in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and medical technology sectors. Both the product and the packaging are sterilised before filling—commonly using steam, hot water, chemicals (e.g., peracetic acid), or UV light. Filling then takes place in a sterile zone or within an isolator.

Benefits of aseptic filling:

  • Extended shelf life without refrigeration
  • Preserves taste, colour, and nutritional value
  • Reduced need for preservatives
  • High product safety for sensitive goods

Typical applications:

  • Beverages (milk, juices, plant-based drinks)
  • Dairy products (coffee creamer, yoghurt)
  • Pharmaceuticals (injectable solutions, infusions)
  • Medical and specialised nutrition

Standards and quality requirements:

  • Compliance with HACCP and GMP
  • ISO 9001 and ISO 22000 for food production
  • EU and FDA requirements for pharmaceutical products
