Tertiary packaging is the outermost packaging level and is primarily used for transport, storage, and logistics. It consolidates multiple secondary packs into larger handling units and protects them during transit from mechanical stress, moisture, and other environmental influences.

Typical tertiary packaging includes pallet loads secured with stretch wrap, strapping, bulk cartons, or transport crates. While it does not come into direct contact with the product, it is critical for transport safety and supply-chain efficiency.

Benefits of tertiary packaging:

  • Protection against transport damage
  • Efficient handling in logistics operations
  • Standardised load units for storage and shipping
  • Reduced product loss across the supply chain

Typical applications:

  • Food and beverage (palletised beverage cartons or glass bottles)
  • Chemical industry (canisters or drums on pallets)
  • Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics (cartoned products in bulk units)
  • E-commerce and shipping (consolidation and shipping cartons)

Standards and quality requirements:

  • International transport and dangerous goods regulations (e.g., ADR, IATA)
  • EU packaging legislation
  • Recycling and sustainability standards for transport materials
